Open Thread For July 2005
This Space Intentionally Left Blank
Today we launch a new feature at Portland Communique: Monthly open threads for readers to use to discuss whatever they wish (excluding the usual prohibition against comment spam, of course).
Our occasional open threads don't tend to attract much attention, but every now and then we hear from readers who wish they existed here. So this is something of a compromise position. Every month, at the start of the month (except for this month, when we're posting this halfway through), we will open up a thread such as this one.
In order to make sure people can always find the current month's open thread, a link to it will be kept at the top of the right-hand sidebar.
From here on out, any and all clearly off-topic discussion, or simply comments that for whatever reason don't appear to fit within the context of other posts, should be kept in that month's open thread.

Things that make me go, "Why":
PDC gets rid of $15,000 yearly expense account for highest paid public employee to make a point ($160,000, DAMN!)
Jack Bog slams Erik Sten on everything from PGE to the gap in his tooth; he secretly loves and admires the councilman and has a "Public Power, Now!" bumper sticker on his Green Party letterman jacket.
Are new Gelato shops in the formerly low-income communities of Portland a beacon of displacement or a human attempt at connecting with the disenfranchised on cool italian flavors?
Sam Adams is seen busking downtown and screwing with idle Portland patrons as part of his connecting with the community program. Next on the list: Working in a hip tattoo parlor with mulitple piercings and a baby tee-shirt with "PUBLIC RUB = TAXPAYER LOVE".

That's just too much.
Wow B!x, is this just like Lars Larson's First Amendment Fridays?

OPB is hiring scabs "in preparation of a potential strike" (http://www.opb.org/insideopb/employment/).
The station's two chief executives earn over $150k a year (according to their '03 return).
These things I will remember during the next round of fundraising.

I'd hardly call inner Irvington "formerly low-income". I mean, I grew up there, and in my 24 years I haven't seen any "projects" dozed to make way for those 5,000-square-foot houses. Perhaps 'cause they're all about a hundred years old.

I thought I was going to have a SouthEast Community Center by now over near 12th and Stark....what happened to that with the City Commish's?
The One True b!X on 15 Jul 2005
FWIW, I discovered upon moving to my new place that I am all of two blocks from where that inner SE community center is supposed to go.

To His honor the mayor, and of course Randy Leonard:
Twice now, the city of London has been hit with terror acts, twice we have received emails from two friends of ours who live there, who twice missed getting killed, by living and riding the mass transportation of that city.
She is married to a Kuwaiti man (a Muslim), who hid her, and her two kids in the back of a truck when Saddam attacked there, and then he, stayed behind and fought in the local resistance, before we kicked Saddam out..they both are sick of what is happening an are proud of the spirit of the city and the government for the actions taken since they were hit. Wish that were true here.
Is it really going to take such a deal here to get people who may get their doors knocked on, or kicked down, if the reason for it is there. We can say we are sorry if we are wrong...That's the progressive way...Right?
No....We honor, without question, anyone illegal or not, and provide guarantee's of the Constitution....EVEN IF THE DOCUMENT SAY'S THEY MUST BE BORN HERE.
The recall I led which was unsuccessful on Katz (allergic to Katz) GOD THAT WAS FUNNY, will be a slam-dunk, if God forbid, any terror attack, anywhere, can be traced or was planned in PDX. The issue of Tom an mostly Randy's deal for pulling out of the JTTF, maybe painful for us, and not them if we are hit here and it can be traced here
Lastly....this ones for me, 300 plus people (criminally insane people with a violent, documented history of such acts as MURDER----ARSON OR RAPE, will be placed in your neighborhoods soon. There will be nothing you can do...even if it's next to your kids school.
They will have up too 90 minutes of unsupervised walks past your house..TOM an RANDY told me they don't give a DAMN!
The only way for me to feel better this evening is for Tom...and Randy, to get on the same bus you ride each day, and to make sure they have their very own criminally insane grouphome in their neighborhoods, an personally flyer their neighbors doors with the announcement of it...DAMN...I feel better. Now that The Oregonian's Inside Line has been disconnected as of 7/15, is there some other number people can call for movie listings? The time? Weather? I've been calling 225-5555 since before you had to dial 503.
Steve on 24 Jul 2005
Nevermind, I just found a service that's almost identical. It's called Tell Me at 1-800-555-TELL (1-800-555-8355). It has time, weather, news, stocks, sports scores, lottery numbers, traffic alerts, movies, horoscopes, soap opera recaps, driving directions, and even a game. It only allows about 3 minutes per call, but you can keep calling back.

What's this about Gelato?
Jack Peek on 25 Jul 2005
It seems Little WILLIAMSPORT, PA. Has an interesting allowed land use code....NO CRIMINALLY INSANE GROUP HOMES NEAR A SCHOOL!
If this is so, then Katz, all of her staff then, and all of the Multnomah ladies and their staff, lawyers for a certain non-profit, the lead people at that business, a few state reps, 3 State of Oregon, and a junior senator are damn liars. More to follow!
