Seeking Input On 'Online Journalism Awards' Entries
Browse Our Archives, Make Your Picks
It's time once again to consider under what categories and (where applicable) using which entries we will submit material from Portland Communique to this year's Online Journalism Awards.
There seem to be a few changes this year, including the addition to some categories of a "division" for sites with less than 100,000 unique visitors per month (as opposed to the usual separation of more than and less than 500,000 per month), which arguably increases our chances in those categories.
So, here's your assignment. First, examine the categories for those which seem relevant to what we do here. Second, browse around through the archive links below to find material published between July 1, 2004, and June 30, 2005, which we could submit if the category requires specific articles.
- July 2004
- August 2004
- September 2004
- October 2004
- November 2004
- December 2004
- January 2005
- February 2005
- March 2005
- April 2005
- May 2005
- June 2005
For example, do you believe that this site "successfully fulfills its editorial mission, effectively serves its audience, maximizes the use of the Web's characteristics and represents the highest journalistic standards"? Then we'd be eligible for the under-100,000 visitors division of the General Excellence in Online Journalism category, for which entries "consist of one main URL and up to three additional sub-URLs in the same domain (to highlight specific features)."
Or, if you think we've offered "a unique and powerful voice of commentary original to the Web" than we can submit "up to five examples" to the under-100,000 visitors division of the Online Commentary category.
We'll worry about the award-specific fundraising later (there are, of course, entry fees). For now, please consider as your Communique homework assignment doing some reading through the relevant monthly archives to find material you think might be worth submitting.

Bix - I'll take a look at the individual posts shortly. For now, though, I'll share this thought... You've been taking stronger and stronger editorial positions over the last year. While that's fine, it's more bloggish and less journalistic in nature... right?
I'd focus your entries on this award on the more jouranlistic ones... The stuff where you're the only reporter in the room covering some obscure hearing. That's your strength.

My thinking was that could be the focus for anything I might submit under "General Excellence", but the "Online Commentary" would give room for more opinionated content.
(No rule that says I can't submit under both categories.)

I'm actually thinking that maybe I should go back and put all my Burnside Bridgehead stuff into its own category, so that category archive page can be one of the "three additional sub-URLs in the same domain (to highlight specific features)" under General Excellence?

I'm thinking now, that if General Excellence is one of my submissions, then the three sub-URLs I would submit in addition to the site's main URL would be the 2004 Mayoral Campaign archive page, the Joint Terrorism Task Force archive page, and (once it's created) a Burnside Bridgehead archive page.
Which would leave a decision regarding which five examples to submit under Online Commentary -- something of a more difficult thing to root out from the archives.
