To Attendees Of May 14 City Club Salon With 'Oregonian' Editorial Page Editor
Press The Critical Questions, Please
Readers may recall that last Summer we attended a couple of so-called Citizen Salons, fundraising dinners for the City Club of Portland. There's another round of them this year and they've announced just one so far -- but it's a doozy.
Dip into discussion about how Oregon's largest newspaper makes editorial decisions with guest provocateur Bob Caldwell who oversees The Oregonian's editorial page. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres lead an all-organic menu of scalloped chicken, seasonal assorted vegetables and a headline-making dessert.
So we're urging whichever eight people make reservations to attend this one to challenge Caldwell on his newspaper's misuse of its op-ed pages to slant public discussion of issues (such as the JTTF) in the direction of its own editorial positions, contrary to the traditional role of op-ed pages.
There are no shortage of other questions Caldwell should be asked about his paper's editorial policies (including Fred Stickel's remarks about internment of Japanese-Amercians during World War II), and we strongly suggest that those who attend this dinner do not let Caldwell off the hook or turn them into apologists for his paper.
