(Updated) Potter And Jordan To Hold Joint Press Conference

But Council Consideration Delayed Yet Again?

Note: This post has been updated. Any and all updates appear at the end of the original post.

In an indication that an agreement would appear to have been reached, Mayor Tom Potter and Special Agent-in-Charge Robert Jordan will hold a joint press conference tomorrow morning to discuss the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Likely safe to say that the two men would not be sharing the stage at a single press conference if some sort of terms had not been worked out.

Earlier this week, Potter secured from his fellow City Council members another one-week delay of the JTTF oversight matter, rescheduling it from this Wednesday to the next. A check of the upcoming agenda items, however, now has that April 27 item once again listed as "to be rescheduled".

We're waiting on word back from the Mayor's office if that new notation incidating yet another delay beyond next Wednesday indeed is correct.

It's not immediately clear to us why there would be yet another postonement if Potter and Jordan are holding a joint press conference, which, as we said, would appear to signal that an agreement has been reached.

Update

As it turns out the latest rescheduling of the JTTF oversight issue from next Wednesday to some later date to be determined is apparently due simply to a problem with the availability of a Council member.

Meanwhile, we have a brief comment from Commissioner Randy Leonard, the original proponent of a new JTTF oversight process and co-sponsor with Potter of the original resolution which was postponed at the end of March.

"While I am not at liberty to tell you the results of the Mayor's negotiations," Leonard said, "I can tell you that I support the product produced from his negotiations with the Feds."

I can't believe how anxious I am about tomorrow's press conference. I think this is a real test for Mayor Potter. Chain of command issues and accountability within the police force should be an arena Potter is uniquely qualified to deal with. And he has certainly shown thus far that he is willing to listen to the concerns of the citizens of Portland.

Here's hoping that Potter can stick to the principles on this issue.
