Paper Reports Richard Rosenthal To Be Offered Denver Job
Announcement Supposedly Coming Today
Another story we haven't been following is the candidacy of Richard Rosenthal for a "cop monitor" position with the City of Denver. Currently, he heads the often-critiqued Independent Police Review here in Portland.
According to an article in the Denver Post, Denver's mayor is expected to offer Rosenthal the position there sometime today.
While he headed the IPR here in Portland, Rosenthal has seen everything from the mass resignation of members of the Citizen Review Committee to the commissioning of a major report from the Police Assessment Resource Center on the way the Portland Police Bureau handles investigations of officer-involved shootings.
(Parenthetically, he would become the latest in a string of controversial figures in Portland public life moving on to other things. Make of that what you will, or not.)
We're just passing through here, but we know that there is a widely-divergent set of opinions on Rosenthal's tenure here in Portland, so we thought we've open up a thread for comments on this development.

While I have harbor no ill-will towards Mr. Rosenthal - I hope that, should he leave his post with IPR, the selection process for his successor will be more oriented toward trying to find a qualified LOCAL person with more street cred here in Portland. It was by way of the fallout from the "Rampart" fiasco in Los Angeles that Mr. Rosenthal joined the IPR . . . something that should have been a red flag for Mayor Katz when she hired him. Perhaps such an oversight can be avoided this time around.

This is a story I haven't been following closely either. Denver has had some real police problems. There's been very little coverage of this in the Denver media. The Post article doesn't mention much more than controversy over his being "too deferential" to city officials. Is there more to it?

Found an older Post article on the resignations.

For some background on Rosenthal's tenure, and avoiding using The Oregonian since their archives usually vanish behind the paywall, try this Portland Tribune search for stories in 2003 to the present, and this one for stories in 20002 and earlier.
