(Updated) Coverage Of 'Communique' Listing In 'WW' Give Guide

Two Media/Journalism Weblogs Pick Up Story

Note: This post has been updated. Any and all updates appear at the end of the original post.

Thus far the interest has not quite been as high as we would have preferred, but two weblogs devoted to "new media" and/or journalism have picked up the fact that we are listed in the Willamette Week Give Guide as an individual or group deserving of people's financial contributions -- an effort which likely is the last chance to keep Portland Communique alive past the end of this year.

First came J. D. Lasica posting a New Media Musings item about it back on November 27. And today there's a dotJournalism item on it as well.

As we've said previously, our hope has been to draw some interest from the wider (meaning outside of Portland) community of people concerned with the idea of weblogs engaging in journalism and reporting, on the premise that such interest might generate an entirely different network of people from which to draw contributions to us via the Give Guide.

Of all the people we've reached out to (most of whom, in fact, were already familiar with us either from our work on this site or from projects with which we've been involved in the past), only these two so far have found our situation worthy of note. Oh, well. It was worth a shot, right?

Finally, as far as we know, we have no way of knowing what the response has or has not been in terms of contributions to the Give Guide. We just have to wait until they get to the point of disbrusing the contributions to see how we did or did not do.

Update

That dotJournalism piece got picked up as an OJC brief (OJC is published by The Online Journalism Review).

Update

If anyone here in Portland is interested, here is a downloadable flyer (pdf) asking people to contribute to this site via the Give Guide. See if your favorite coffeeshop or whatever is willing to put it up for the month of December.

    Perhaps you missed my comment:

For whatever it's worth after the fact, these were hardly intentional slights. Along the way, some people get missed, and I apoligize for that.

Not that it will be worth much to those who at one point or another may have been missed, but not much else can be said.

It's always nice to be thanked, but not getting thanked hardly seems like adequate provocation to cut off support if one believes the experiment in progress here is worth it.

Much better than the alternative, which was one site I "subscribed" to that promptly went into a self-promotional tailspin that still hasn't corrected itself enough to deliver what readers were promised as a result of their subscription dollars.

All that aside, is there anywhere on the site that tells readers where things stand re: funds without waiting for an update on the front page? You know... a snazzy thermometer or something? ;-)

Since I have no way of knowing how the fundraising is performing via the Give Guide, the answer to that is: Unfortunately, no.

I was asking in a sort of "in general" sort of way, since I thought you were taking bucks in from other means, too.

Oh, well technically there are Paypal contributions, but that's mainly at this point down to the monthly subscribers, which haven't changed in number except for a couple I lost in the past month or so.

Meanwhile, for those who might have gotten readjusted to actual content here, and then we suddenly up and post another "meta" item, our post on Wednesday's discussion at Council on the Mayor's murals proposal should be up later tonight, even though we're fighting off a cold and should be resting.

If we don't do the murals tonight, we'll get behind, since Chief Foxworth speaks to the City Club tomorrow, and then there's a Democratic Party of Oregon meeting all day on Saturday that I think I want to sit in on.

I will say this about potential future plans, though: If the Give Guide thing manages to net me enough to get another couple months of this site, what I will do at that point is create a campaign via Dropcash with a target amount of what it would take to do this site full-time for another full year, and direct all future contributions through that.

Of course, that hinges on what the Give Guide produces, but I figured I'd give some sense of what would be next, using the premise of a Give Guide-fostered additional two months.
