If We're Not Mistaken, We're Fully Operational

Sorry For The Problems

This time yesterday, visitors here were receiving a frustrated notice saying that our upgrade to MT 3.1 had taken a rather disastrous turn, and all manner of things had broken or become inaccessible. It's taken us twenty-four hours or so -- and we won't go into the rather sordid, complicated, and nind-numbing details -- but we appear to have brought everything back online.

Earlier today, we did put the content back up, but had disabled access to any interactive scripts (such as those for comments and trackbacks) to make sure that no other damage might be done and no changes to the database were made. If you tried to post a reader comment today, you would have received a "page not found" error in the process.

All the back-end stuff should be fully-functional now, including comments and trackbacks, so if you had anything pent up and in need of expression, the gates are open once again. This also means we can start back in on the majorly-long items that we were working on prior to everything going to Hell in a handbasket here.

However: It is not entirely guaranteed that we won't notice another problem crop up, so if you encounter any errors, please email us to let us know.

Our thanks, and our apologies for the inconvenience.

What version of MT were you using before? I'm considering the move to 3.1 myself and am just trying to make sure I don't screw something up.

I went from 3.01D to 3.1 -- but my problems began because of something I don't think many users will encounter. Namely, I ran the upgrade31 script on a version of PostgreSQL that was too old and that started a chain of events which made things almost unrecoverable. I had to do a lot of fast learning and trial-and-error to figure out how to get things working.

But that situation is probably pretty rare. I do see various other people on the MT forums having other troubles, tho.

That said, however, once I got everything properly loaded into a new database, I have encountered none of the other problems people in the forums seem to be having.

Good to see you finished the "methodical gruntwork" successfully ;) Hope it goes smoothly from here on out.. *knocks on wood*

I don't know how else to tell you this, and it seems to be relevant anyway: I think you may be having the same problem on The War Prayer. I tried to post a comment but wasn't able to. I couldn't sign in to Typepad. (Sorry if you already know this.)

    Ha!

A couple of things are still broken, but in the main likely are just the usual sorts of bugs that crop up during upgrades. For instance, the code we use to drop an "UPDATED:" marker in the title of entries that have been updated since their original posting for some reason only is working intermittently.

Welcome back. I missed you and will be coughing up 5 bucks a month towards your continued existence.
