(Updated) Portland Police Officer Jason Sery Resigns
Shot And Killed James Jahar Perez Earlier This Year
Note: This post has been updated. Any and all updates appear at the end of the original post.
A very brief visit in this midst of our hiatus, because we just learned something that we had not heard previously. If it was reported, we missed it. But it seems that Officer Jason Sery -- the officers responsible for the shooting death of James Jahar Perez -- has resigned from the Portland Police Bureau. We learned of this through a statement from Chief Derrick Foxworth that just went out to the media via email:
n August 23, 2004, Officer Jason Sery resigned as a member from the Portland Police Bureau. I spoke with Officer Sery and he told me that this was a decision that he was making absent of any duress related to the shooting of James Jahar Perez. The decision was made after much consideration and thoughtful discussion with family and others.
I would like to thank Officer Sery for his service to the organization and the community. I and the members of the Portland Police Bureau wish Officer Sery well in his new endeavor.
There's nothing at this hour in a Google News search for Sery's name. We're unsure whether this means it hasn't been reported yet, or if it was reported by outlets not picked up by Google News.
Update
And now, Sery's resignation letter (pdf), in which he gives his reasons for resigning: To take a "full time ministry position with the junior high program at Southwest Bible Church, and a teaching position at Southwest Christian School."

I'm wondering about your Job of current and If God has laid it on your heart to at the very least be human and apolygize to several of your victims, and their family's?so that they in Gods true light can at least consider forgiving you.
I wondered back when you were a very gung ho young officer,if the loss of your Mother was effecting you?
I lost 3 sets of Parents ,and had simialar experiences as you've had.
It was very difficult to not have turned out like Kendra James and Perez, using drugs and self medicating, but God has Plans for those of us that he has put thru some life trials.
Sparing some of us was GODs gift ,and with great gifts comes great responsibility wheather we step up and use them effectivly will be a reflection back to God to Thank him for sparing us.
I hope that The effects of The Portland Police Department upon Blacks in Portland
will some day change, with the hiring of a more diverse ,and level playing field of officers.to fairly teach & learn about their community assignments and community they work in.
And most of all, when there is a drug problem, you need to understand the mentality or lack of it,while people are on them.
Rarely the picture may not be as it really seems.
Drug users are Mentally ill, and as such , deem a different set of Police intervention , and Policy making.
I'm wondering if you've encountered any youth at your church with Drug issues? and if you approach them differently, because of their Family ties to a church?
You may want to stay out of the News Jason, but I think that when can get to a place where you feel like redeeming your self in the Black communityand in America, by stepping up and being accountable,
That will be more of the Leading Light that God wants to see, than a Group of Christians only mentoring to Christians in their own circle.
Go where God is really needed, get out your comfort zone and go where God fears not to go.....
Christians need to mentor to non Christians by being example's to the poor and the needy and the down trodden .
Someday the Headline may say..."Former Portland,Oregon Cop involved with deadly shooting, admits Bias At Black Community Forum that address's Police Racism....vows he's changing his views by actions ......"
It could happen...
