The Return Of The Friday Campaign Round-Up

How Did We Ever Survive The Last Two Months?

Goodness, it's only the middle of July and here we are pimping out some tidbits from the Mayoral and City Council campaigns.

First up is the opening to today's Phil Stanford column in the Portland Tribune:

City Commissioner Jim Francesconi may have gone from prohibitive favorite to underdog in the mayor's race -- but is he down in the dumps? ... "I like being Seabiscuit instead of War Admiral," says Jim. ... Bold talk, to be sure. But does the new front-runner, Tom Potter, sound worried? ... "I read 'Seabiscuit,' " says the ex-police chief. "And I can tell you, he ain't no Seabiscuit." ... The mayor's race may be heating up, after all.

Although I think we all already knew that, given the back-and-forth from the two of them over Francesconi's cross-assignment proposal for the Portland Police Bureau lately.

Meanwhile, the Potter campaign sent out an email to supporters today which, among other things reports that they've moved out of their "hot pink house on Belmont" in favor of new digs on lower SE Hawthorne, and reveals that they plan to have campaign tables around town staffed on a daily basis.

Over in the Commissioner No. 1 race, Sam Adams yesterday sent out email as well, this one calling for the formation of a City of Portland Utility Review Board, which he claims will strengthen accountability and cut costs.

And today, the Nick Fish campaign also sent out an email to supporters, in which they latch onto a citizen's comments that Fish is "ubiquitous" around town these days. His opponent on the other hand, asserted just the opposite the other day. Who knows? Although we admit to having recently run into Fish at a couple of local community events lately, but until the other day we hadn't seen Adams since the primary election. Your mileage may vary, since our event schedule has been lighter in recent weeks than previously, and so may not necessarily be representative.

Fish's email also offered a pointer to an upcoming public forum on art and culture featuring the two Council candidates and the two Mayoral candidates. Available from the same site are candidate answers (pdf) to questions about the arts.

So it may only be July, but it looks like everyone is beginning to gear up for the general election campaign.

    b!X,
Did you mean "pimping out" or did you mean to type "pumping out"?

No, I meant pimping. I don't know why, particularly.
