Into The Photographic Wayback Machine

Synchronicity is a wonderful thing. Earlier today, Jack Bogdanski posted a reference to a collection of historical photographs of Portland. On the photographic site itself, you can find the various Portland pages by going to this page and scrolling down.

But entirely by coincidence, as we were browsing around the website of the Oregon Historical Society this past hour, we discovered it has posted a set of photographs as well. To our knowledge, these online samplings from their photographic collections were not previously on their website.

Anyone who has spare time and an interest in this sort of things really ought to spend an afternoon at the Society's library going through their photo collections in person. We did this when we were researching the so-called Great Light Way of illuminated arches which once stretched along SW Third Avenue, and that experience barely scratched the surface of what they have down there.

For what it's worth, OHS is launching a new exhibit and on the morning of July 10 (scroll down) they are holding a breakfast out on their Plaza. Any other bloggers who are local or state history buffs want to make a "meet" out of it?

You are one of the few people I've ever known who a) knew about the lights on 3rd and b) want them back! They were beautiful and while there are lots of other things we need to spend $$ on around here, I'd love to see them back.
