Brandon Mayfield To Speak At City Club Forum
We don't usually post event announcements, but we're fairly certain that this particular event will be of great interest to our readers. This afternoon, the City Club of Portland issued a press release announcing that Brandon Mayfield will be speaking at the upcoming June 25 edition of their regular Friday Forums series.
Mayfield, of course, is the local lawyer mistakenly identified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as being the source of a fingerprints left on a bag tied to the terrorist train bombings in Spain. He was held under the material witness statute until the Department of Justice finally conceded to the courts that the evidence in fact did not point to Mayfield.
For some of the background on this case, see our items on the irony of the incident, criticism of the FBI affidavit against Mayfield, links to other coverage, additional comments on the fingerprint evidence, and our accusation of bias and profiling at the FBI.
Mayfield will be joined by Steve Wax, the Federal public defender who represented him, and a "representative of the Federal government" has been invited to participate as well. The forum will be held at the Multnomah Athletic Club, located at 1849 SW Salmon, on June 25, with the program beginning at 12:15 PM. General seating for non-members of City Club is $5.00 at the door.
