According to the Portland Oregon Visitors Association, our City "boasts more microbreweries, brewpubs and outlets (pubs offering microbrews on tap) per capita than any other American city." In fact, their list of facts and trivia regarding Portland and beer offers these helpful tidbits (among others):

  • Portland boasts 28 microbreweries, the highest concentration of microbreweries per capita in the nation.
  • According to the Oregon Brewers Guild, no matter where you are in Portland, you're never more than 15 minutes from a craft brewery.
  • Oregon's craft breweries account for 10 percent of the state's beer sales. In most states, 2 percent is the norm.
  • Oregon produces 17 percent of the nation's hops and 4 percent of the world's hops.
  • Oregon microbreweries produced 500,000 barrels of beer in 2000.

Why do we pass all of this along? Because the Portland Oregon Visitors Association is also encouraging people to vote for Portland to become the permanent home of the Beer Hall of Fame. Just what is the Beer Hall of Fame?

Apparently, it's a project of the United States Beer Drinking Team, which says of themselves: "We are on a constant search for the best beer on the best day, at the best place, with the best friends."

What does the U.S. Beer Drinking Team say they're looking for in a City to become the home of the Beer Hall of Fame?

  • Adequate space availability in existing or new construction.
  • Within 20 miles of a “top 100” city by population.
  • Within 20 miles of a commercial airport.
  • Within 6 miles of an interstate, "beltway" or adequate access roads.
  • Adequate hotel accommodations within walking distance.
  • Adequate off street parking.
  • Public transportation or adequate "transportation for hire."
  • Adequate public interest.
  • Appropriate incentives.

(Other "optional preferences" indicated by the U.S. Beer Drinking Team are a waterfront location, convention center, and a professional football, baseball, or basketball team.)

There are a total of 211 cities includes on their online voting form. For those wanting to find Portland's listing as quickly as possible, it's number 23 on the list.

We all have any number of more prosaic (important, but still more prosaic) votes to cast by the evening of this coming Tuesday, May 18. Why not cast a vote for something more unique and intriguing as well?

Update

Readers might notice that this item has been trackbacked by an acquaintance of ours from Denver, who is pushing his fellow Coloradoans to vote for the Mile-City City to be the home of the Beer Hall of Fame. So the inter-weblog rivalry is on, it seems. Vote now! Vote Portland!

I also just learned that it was announced on April 29 that something called the American Barista and Coffee School opened here in Portland.

Yes, we actually have a coffee school.

Portland actually has more breweries than any other city in the world period. It surpassed Koln several years ago.

Is it just me, or is that page down at the moment?

Ha, yeah, those people are in my building (the Skidmore Fountain Building). They leased this floor's "break room" and filled it with espresso machines. There are about 15 people in there right now, most of whom are wearing suits or other business attire.

I have no idea what they do, though. Isn't that the kind of thing you could learn on the job pretty easily? Weird.

(Oh, I just read their website: it seems like it's designed for people who own coffee shops. That makes more sense, I guess.)

Brilliant headline. I moved here four years ago and was overcome by the sudsy abandon of Portlanders. Having lived in many places, I can easily say that the Beer Hall of Fame belongs here.

Yeah, I really want the city I live in to be known as the fat, lazy, beer-swilling capitol. Send these losers to some other city. Anywhere but here. Please.

Who even knew there was a U.S Beer Drinking Team, but they appear to be searching for a home for the Beer Hall of Fame. Vote Denver! The U.S. Beer Drinking Team and Beer Radio announce their national search to
