Media Finally Notices Measure 26-53
'Communique' Cited As The Opposition
Outside of endorsement items from Willamette Week and The Portland Mercury, there hasn't been any real coverage of Measure 26-53, the sole City measure on the ballot for next week's May 18 primary.
We tend to suspect this is because most news outlets simply have accepted at face value the official line that the measure is little more than a "housekeeping" matter, rather than take a look at it for themselves.
Thankfully, today's Oregonian breaks the silence and offers voters the opportunity to notice and examine the measure for themselves.
Their article also marks the first time that PORTLAND COMMUNIQUE has been cited in the course of actual news coverage:
Opposition has arisen on the "Portland Communique," a weblog (http://communique.portland.or.us), read by Portland's political junkies. The weblog notes that less attention is given to the May primary and recommends an alternative: make the May election into a true primary where the top two finishers advance, regardless of whether one gets a majority.
For those readers visiting because of this mention, here is our item on Measure 26-53 (be sure to read the comments as well). There is also a link to it -- as well as links to our other endorsements -- in a box at the top of our main page.

Now that all voting in Oregon is by mail, I would think that write-in candidates may be somewhat more viable than they were in the days of polling places. Don't ask me why -- just a hunch.
