(Updated) Digging Around In Other People's Endorsements, Part I
'Willamette Week' Makes Their Picks
Note: This post has been updated. Any and all updates appear at the end of the original post.
While you are all waiting with bated breath for our final endorsement in the local races -- that being for Commissioner No. 4, not due from us until May 9 at the latest -- we thought we'd make sure to pass along the endorsements of Willamette Week. Of course, we also have something to say about some of them as well.
Later this evening, or perhaps sometime tomorrow, we'll also weigh in on tomorrow's Portland Mercury endorsements as well.
But beginning with today's Willamette Week endorsements, we must point out some peculiarities, starting with their endorsement of Tom Potter for Mayor. In that endorsement, they had these things to say about Phil Busse (who, of course, received our own endorsement):
Portland Mercury managing editor Phil Busse, meanwhile, launched an energetic campaign that did more than all his opponents' combined to reach out to young voters. Our excitement for him is tempered by the easy disregard for the truth he's shown as a journalist (see "KO'ed on Salon.com," WW, Oct. 3, 2001) and the lack of detail he offers for many of his ideas.
First off, if you want the details on that Salon-related bit, you can read that earlier WW piece. It's clearly a rather stupid moment in Busse's journalistic career -- and not at all a favorable one -- but it's also only a single moment.
We're more concerned (for now) with the irony in Willemette Week asserting that Busse's agenda lacks detail in the middle of their endorsement of Potter, who has possibly received more criticism about a lack of specifics than any other of the "major" candidates in this race.
But as for that accusation of an "easy disregard for the truth," we feel compelled to point out another irony in the WW endorsements, this time from their endorsement of Nick Fish, in which they say of Sam Adams (who received our endorsement):
At the Candidates Gone Wild! debate earlier this month, questioner Steve Novick noted that Adams had been asked at an earlier event to give Katz a grade and gave her a C+. Novick went on to ask, "Couldn't you have found something better to do with your life than work for a C+ politician? And how much personal responsibility do you take for not raising her up to at least a B?" Adams ducked the question.
Well, who's suffering from an easy disregard for truth now, oh mighty Willamette Week staffers? You know full well that you are inaccurately reflecting what happened in that exchange, wherein Adams did not duck the question, but instead pointed out that the premise of the question, in fact, was wrong, and that Adams, in fact, had never said that he himself would give Katz a C+ grade.
Now, we didn't have our notebook with us that night, opting instead to kick back, drink, wander the aisles, and meet interesting people. But we're sure, as sponsors, that WW must have an accurate record of this exchange and perhaps they will go back and correct themselves in their next issue.
In the meantime, try not to easily disregard the truth in the same article in which you accuse someone else of easily disregarding the truth.
Meanwhile, WW went on to endorse Randy Leonard in the race for which we ourselves have not yet made an endorsement. So we will refrain from commenting on this at all, except to point out their pick.
Almost finally, we will pass along the fact that they endorsed all of the incumbent County Commissioners, as we did also.
But they manage to utterly bungle their endorsement of Measure 26-53, by urging voters to approve it. Falling for the misinformation that this measure is a "housekeeping" matter, they fail to do any examination of the matter for themselves and simply take the City Auditor at his word that there's nothing here worth worrying about. See our own analysis for a little more thoughtfulness.
Disclosure: PORTLAND COMMUNIQUE accepts political advertisements, and currently runs ads from the Busse, Francesconi, and Potter campaigns.
Update
See the comments to this item for an update on the Busse promise for online instant reporting of campaign contributions, wherein the campaign "main web guy" offers an explanation. It's a reasonable one, except that Busse obviously should have held off making the promise -- let alone claiming it was underway -- until things had actually, in reality, gotten nailed down. But keep an eye on the Busse site in the coming days to see if it now materializes.

Note that in tomorrow's Mercury, under "Instant campaign finance reporting", Phil Busse claims to be "Doing it". Say what, Phil?
I find it sorta annoying mostly just because I can't imagine what the hold-up is. Throw up an .xls file and move on, right? I dunno.

Your endorsement in the #4 race is based partly on your attendance at the SE Uplift forum, right? What's the date and time of that forum again? Also, are there any other forums in that race? I was also curious as to your actual timetable on voting...it seems like what with mail in voting and all people vote way too early and things like this Schrunk scandal come too late for them...so people should hold on to their ballots and get all the facts in.

Yeah. We've mentioned recently that he hasn't done this yet, and intended to point it out again when we got to that set of endorsements. It's especially irksome because he announced he'd be doing this as a response to our challenge to all candidates to do so. And we know he and/or his campaign reads this site. Yet there's still an utter silence about what happened to this plan.

Yes, the SE Uplift forum is Friday at 7:00 PM, until 9:00 PM, at Portland Mennonite Church, 1312 SE 35th Street.
Right now, I do not know of any others, but that doesn't mean there aren't any.
As for voting, I myself still vote on election day itself, because (while I support vote-by-mail) I enjoy whatever ceremony I can still get out of it, and so I drop my ballot off at the County's election headquarters.

I think Zusman and the Willy Week people are jealous of how cool Phil Busse and the Mercury are...The Portland Mercury- the way cool younger brother of a Willy Week that went off to college became an RA and got seriously lame.

Adding on to what Arya says, I think this is just an extension of how Willamette Week harbors an unsightly digust for all other news publications in town, when they don't have much to brag about themselves.

The instant reporting -- unfortunately, I was in Europe when Phil made that particular claim, and I'm the main web guy. So since I got back, getting that stuff online has been slowed mainly due to communications issues.
I was thinking I'd put the contributions up in a web-readable format, but now that you mention it, why don't I just throw up an Excel file? Good idea, thanks.
At any rate, the second C&E filing is due today (Thursday), so with that sent in and published, I pledge that we will have a frequently updated contributions.xls (or something to that effect) as soon as possible after the filing.
Sorry we've kept you in the dark on this issue -- there are a lot of tasks to manage, and we dropped the ball on this one.

Don't even get me started on the Willy Week's retarded endorsment of Rod Monroe for Metro. What the hell was that about?

Heads up- in case you missed it, the Concordia Neighborhood Association is sponsoring a forum for the candidates for Seat 1 and Seat 4, to be held at Concordia University at 7pm Tuesday May 11 in Luther Hall. 2811 NE Holman.
The One True b!X on 07 May 2004
Yes, well, I'll have my endorsement up by then.
It's going to piss off just about everybody.
Arya on 07 May 2004
Hmm...you mentioned a No Endorsement possibility earlier...
The One True b!X on 07 May 2004
It's, well, a little more... unusual than that.
Arya on 08 May 2004
Looking forward to it.
