Changes Under The Hood (And Elsewhere)

Those of you who noticed that COMMUNIQUE was down for software upgrades earlier might be wondering just what was up.

Simply put, we were upgrading to Movable Type 3.0 Developer Edition, and as part of this upgrade we move this weblog out of our old MT 2.661 installation -- where another weblog or two reside -- into a fresh installation of its own. This required exporting all of our entries from the old installation and then importing them into the new installation.

Now that this process is complete, readers shouldn't notice any differences just yet. Eventually, we may be adding TypeKey functionality to this site, which will enable readers to register their name and email address for comment purposes. But that's not a near-term addition, so we'll provide early warning and further explanations if and when we get that far along.

Meanwhile, in the next month or so we expect to switch from Textads to Blogads for the advertising section(s) of our right-hand sidebar. This is mainly due to very poor response times on the part of Textads when it comes to addressing issues both major and minor -- including the fact that they overcharged one of our advertisers by a factor of five.

Advertisers who currently have ads running on this site do not have to worry about being cut off prior to the date on which their ads are scheduled to end their runs. We are going to wait for everyone's ads to expire naturally, and then make the switch.

There shouldn't currently be any issues with our new installation, but if anyone encounters anything bizarre, feel free to post a comment on this item.

Are you going to pay for the new commercial license? I know you dropped the $150 for the first time around. If so, do we need another "Save b!X" targeted fundraiser?

Well, technically, MT3 is free for single-author installations with no more than three weblogs. This fresh installation has one author and one weblog.

Plus I'm still waiting for them to sort out whether their storefront's policy on credits for previous payments or what Mena has been saying about credits for previous payments is the actual policy. Because I've given MT/6A like $170 total between an earlier donation and then a commercial license.

Either way, I'm not worried about it.

For what it's worth, if anyone cares, I've gotten the CSS working for the HTML that Blogads serves with its ads. So as soon as all of the current local ads expire (still several weeks away, I think), we will be making the switch over to them.

Also: Once I switch over to Blogads, advertisers will have a higher character/word limit for their ad copy, and will be able to include an image in their ads.
