Neighborhoods Celebrate Thirty Years Of Involvement
With roughly-perfect timing (since we recently made a reference to this), the City's website has added a new section for the 30th anniversary of Portland's recognition of neighborhood associations:
The Neighborhood Associations of Portland have put together a celebration of all the things Neighborhood Associations do throughout every year of service. We will use this 30th Anniversary to remind Portland residents and elected officials of the unique and valuable services provided by Neighborhood Associations and the scope of the things we do.
Each month of the year has been given a theme to highlight different aspects of the neighborhood system, and every Wednesday before City Council, neighborhood leaders will be making presentations which "highlight the successes and challenges" of each neighborhood association.
Amongst the events planned for the year-long celebration is an attempt to set the world record for block parties on May 30, in conjunction with the Village Building Convergence (part of The City Repair Project); and as part of the Rose Festival, a birthday party outside City Hall.
Keep an eye on the main page for the anniversary for updates, additional events, and other activities being planned to celebrate Portland's ongoing experiment with institutionalized neighborhood involvement -- including one of our favorites: a compilation of a history of the City's neighborhood associations and how they have developed over the years.
