(Updated) Jury Of Inquest: Day One, Hour One
Note: This post has been updated. Any and all updates appear at the end of the original post.
Although things are not expected to get underway today until 9:30 AM with jury selection (six jurors and two alternates), since we intend to post a fresh item at the top of every hour, we figured we'd make it simple at begin promptly at 9:00 PM.
There is, of course, nothing to report thirty minutes before the proceedings begin, but The Oregonian reports this morning that amongst those scheduled to testify today is Detective Jon Rhodes, the lead investigator in the case.
One last random item: While having coffee outside the Stumptown Coffee Roasters on SE Division, a man hustled by the catch the bus, with a tag dangling around his neck indicating he was on his way to jury duty. We couldn't help but wonder if he would end up being called for the inquest.
Update
According to Ethan Lindsey, also expected to testify today is Officer Sean Macomber, Jason Sery's partner.
Update
As another experiment of sorts, we will be opening up a group chat via Yahoo! Messenger for readers wanting to discuss the inquest as it happens. Be warned that we might decide to post the transcript of this chat to this site afterwards. If you want to join send an instant message on Yahoo! to 'theonetruebix' (without the quotes, obviously) and we'll open up the group chat.
Update
No video feed via kgw.com at the bottom of the hour. And KBOO radio's audio was so bad that they've temporarily switched to music.
Update
Being unsure just how group chats via Yahoo! function, if you can join without being invited, the group chat's name is 'portlandcommunique' (without the quotes, of course).
Update
Juror selection has begun. Instructions are being given by Distict Attorney Mike Schrunk, including information such as disqualifiers and the intended schedule. They are reading the list of potential witnesses, so the jurors can indicate if they know any of them.
Update
Most annoyingly, KBOO feels they have to babble at us rather than letting us listen to the juror selection process.
Update
Ethan Lindsey incidates: "Schrunk made clear he wanted the inquest to proceed with no boos, hisses or cheers from the public." One other reason why it might be best that we are doing this from headquarters.
Update
At ten minutes before the top of the hour, KBOO just cut away from the jury selection once more, this time indicating that they had agreed not to broadcast that portion of the proceedings.

Portland bloggers Ethan Lindsey and Christopher Frankonis (the One True b!X) are both typing up blow-by-blow coverage of the public inquest into the shooting of James Jahar Perez by Portland police officer Jason Sery. It’s the first such inquest...

Why are you using KBOO's audio and not the OregonLive audio? Are you know watching the KGW webcast of the inquest?
The One True b!X on 28 Apr 2004
Because KBOO radio via an actual radio is unlikely to have network congestion as opposed to OregonLive. And I was watching the KGW feed but it died and I've not been able to get it to give me anything other than an error now.
