Coverage Of 'Li v. State of Oregon' Arguments

Since we've yet to provide any real reports from Friday's oral arguments in the same-sex marriage lawsuit, we should at least direct readers to the coverage elsewhere.

The earliest report we saw was an Associated Press report Friday afternoon which opened by framing the legal debate as one between discrimination and tradition.

An OPB News story the same afternoon included the debate over whether this decision is the proper domain of the courts or the legislature.

That same afternoon a second AP story appeared which is substantially the same as the first, but leaves out the to-the-point opener about discrimination versus tradition.

And Saturday's Oregonian story fleshed out more of the arguments on both sides, and reports on the State of Oregon's desire to see a Vermont-style solution, despite precedent when it comes to Article I, Section 20, of the Oregon Constitution that says courts must either nullify the privilege or immunity or expand it.

Finally, therested readers can read the transcript of oral arguments (pdf) thanks to lipka.com, inc. which provided its court reporting services for free so that a written record of the proceedings would be available. Current, we here in Oregon audio record such proceedings rather than use court reporters.

Conveniently, they also transcribed the two news conferences (pdf) which immediately followed the court hearing.
