Two Must-See Campaign Events Coming In April
Miss These And Regret It Forever
We don't normally go out of our way to post advance notice of campaign-related events (and our calendar remains temporarily offline), but in the next month there are two debates to which specific attention should be called.
As it turns out, these are both events with connections to the City Club of Portland. Each is unique in its own respects, which will be apparent below.
Coming up first, on April 9, the City Club's Friday Forum will present a campaign debate featuring Randy Leonard and the participants in the "neighborhood insurgency" campaign against him: Frank Dixon, Leonard Gard, Mark Lakeman, Paul Leistner, Bonny McKnight, and Scott Stephens.
This debate will be moderated by Willamette Week editor Mark Zusman, and will be held at the Multnomah Athletic Club, located at 1849 SW Salmon Street. Typically, these events begin around noon and run for about an hour. Keep on eye on the Club's Friday Forums page for specific details.
Ten days later, on April 19, Portland will be treated to something of a replacement for the "Jabbin' at the Aladdin" debates once held by the late, lamented X-PAC.
"Candidates Gone Wild!" is being organized by the New Leaders Council, Bus Project, and Willamette Week "to bring together candidates for Portland Mayor and City Council in an uncensored debate."
This debate will be held (appropriately enough, for history's sake) at the Aladdin Theater, located at 3017 SE Milwaukie Avenue. Doors will open at 7:00 PM and tickets are $2.00 for general admission.
An earlier call for volunteers called this a "top secret project that will seek to evoke honesty, laughter and enough information from the Mayoral and City Council candidates so we can make good decisions about who will run our city in the years to come." It also made sure to mention that "[f]reely-flowing beer, rocking music and an irreverent debate format should keep candidates off-balance and on the ball!"
As of this writing, there's no clear indication of how many of the twenty-three candidates for Mayor or eighteen candidates for City Council will be participating -- although the City Club's events page currently says: "Sam Adams, Nick Fish, Jim Francesconi, and Tom Potter will be joined by other candidates and special musical guest Menomena."

The Phil Busse for Mayor campaign will be at the "Candidates Gone Wild" event. Phil is going to rock the house. The other candidates better come with their A game and their white flags.

Is that a little smack I hear you talkin', Pete? If by "A game" you mean several dozen hours of debate prep, a couple of a decades worth of puplic speaking experience and the ability to dish out more serves than back-to-back showings of "Honey" . . . than yeah, Tom will have his A-game on. Save the white flags for hankies boys.
b!X, you may also want to include the April 16 City Club mayoral debate for your calendar. Candidates invited are Tom Potter, Jim Francesconi, James Posey and Phil Busse. On April 23rd, one of the more unusual forums of the race is being sponsored by the Oregon Potter's Association. Candidates will answer questions while throwing (as in creating) pottery (I kid you not). You can check out the calendar on our website for more event info: http://www.tomformayor.org
