Three Anti-Marriage Initiatives Withdrawn

One Statutory And One Constitutional Remain In Play

While we were out on other stories, email came in from the state Elections Division of relevance to the Oregon debate over same-sex marriage:

On March 2, 2004, the chief petitioners have withdrawn proposed initiative petitions #146, #147, and #149. Certified ballot titles for proposed initiative petitions #146, #147, and #149 will not be issued and comments will not be accepted. Any comments received will be maintained as part of the permanent record but will not be forwarded to the Attorney General.

This means that the Defense of Marriage Amendment (pdf), the Affirmation of Marriage Constitutional Amendment (pdf), and the Defense of Marriage Act) (pdf) are no longer in play. The latter two -- initiatives numbers 147 and 149 -- were the ones we argued were improperly filed to begin with.

What remains is initiative 148, or the Affirmation of Marriage Act, which proposed a statutory change to the definition of marriage, and the newly-filed initiative which would enact a constitutional defintion of marriage.
