Oregon Anti-Marriage Amendment Receives Draft Ballot Title
Deadline For Comments Is March 24
This afternoon, the state Elections Division received from the Attorney General's office the draft ballot title for the Constitutional Definition Of Marriage initiative (#150) which would amend the Oregon Constitution to include: "It is the policy of Oregon, and its political subdivisions, that only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or legally recognized as a marriage."
Comments on the draft ballot (pdf) title -- "Amends Constitution: Only Marriage Between One Man And One Woman Is Valid Or Legally Recognized As Marriage" -- and its supporting information (results of "yes and "no" votes, and a summary) are due by March 24.
These comments may address either the specific legal standards a ballot title must meet, or statements regarding whether or not the proposed initiative complies with procedural constitutional requirements for submissionn of proposed initiative petitions.
Interested parties should download the draft ballot title for the full text as well as information on comment period procedures.
Once the ballot title is certified, its backers must obtain 100,840 valid signatures by July 2, 2004, in order to place the initiative on the November ballot.
