Fifth Initiative Filed Against Same-Sex Marriage
As if the original four initiatives filed last month were not enough, opponents of same-sex marriage in Oregon yesterday filed another initiative (pdf), this one with the Subject, "Constitutional Definition Of Marriage." Note: This is not the official draft ballot title, which isn't due until March 10, but rather the Subject of the initiative as filed by the chief petitioners.
One of the chief petitioners -- Kent Walton -- should be familiar to readers as one of the three chief petitioners for the four similar initiatives filed last month. The other petitioners -- Dennis R. Tuuri -- is one of the for local pastors recently profiled by The Oregonian.
This initiative, filed as a constitutional change, reads as follows:
The Constitution of the State of Oregon is amended as follows:
It is the policy of Oregon, and its political subdivisions, that only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or legally recognized as a marriage.
There apparently, according to local television newscasts, is now a new group: the Defense of Marriage Coalition, which includes the pastors from The Oregonian, other religious leaders, and politicians. We'll have more on that group, well, when we find something.
