(Updated) City Sets All-Time Record For Number of Mayoral Candidates
Also New Record For Any City Office
Note: This post has been updated. Any and all updates appear at the end of the original post.
On the deadline day for filing, the number of candidates running for Mayor jumped to twenty-two. According to the Elections Division, this is an all-time record not only for Mayor but for any City office.
"Until the May 2004 Primary Election," says the Elections Division, "the record number of Mayor candidates on the ballot was 17 candidates in 2000." They provide a list of the other highest numbers since 1905.
So what's the full roster of Mayoral candidates? Here we go:
- David (The Ack) Ackerman
- Lori Balkema
- Michael Benkoski
- Phil Busse
- Scot (Extremo The Clown) Campbell
- Jim Francesconi
- Craig Gier
- Bart Hanson
- Robert Ted Hinds
- Bruce W. Hollen
- Lew Humble
- Scott Ketchum
- Rosalinda S. Mitchell
- Peter Nilsson
- Donald P. Pfau
- James L. Posey

Candidates Jada Mae Langloss and Orin Scutt Lutz filed withdrawals in February and March, respectively.
Meanwhile, here is the full list (barring further additions in the next 15 minutes or so) for the Commissioner No. 1 postition between vacated by Commissioner Jim Francesconi, who is running for Mayor:
- Sam Adams
- Woody Broadnax
- Nick Fish
- Aquiles U. Montas
- Jason Newell
- Brian H. Smith
- Jerry Watson
And last, but not least, the current list of candidates for the Commissioner No. 4 position currently held by Commissioner Randy Leonard, who is seeking to return to that seat, including the six "neighborhood insurgency" candidates:
- Frank Dixon
- Leonard Gard
- Aaron F. Hall
- Mark Lloyd Lakeman
- Paul Leistner
- Randy Leonard

- Jim Whittenburg
Everyone seemed to think, even many months ago, this election was bound to get a little crazy. With 22 candidates for Mayor, 7 for Commissioner No. 1, and 10 for Commissioner No. 4, it would seem to have come to pass.
Update
Welcoming yet another City person to our site, we pass along information found in the comments to this item, from Susan Francois of the Elections Division:

It is with sadness that I announce that the infamous JIM SPAGG has died this morning. Jim Spagg was a pioneer in cable television when it comes to free speech. He truly believed in free speech and pushed lots of buttons during his time on local cable access. A tribute will be posted on his site in the near future. Funeral information will be posted once known at www.JimSpagg.com ,
