(Updated) Regarding The New Layout

Note: This post has been updated. Any and all updates appear at the end of the original post.

There are a few styles and slight layout issues on an element here and there. But all the testing I've done personally or had others do for me leads me to believe that everything other than Internet Explorer for Mac is rendering the new design properly.

You might note that the new layouts for comment previews and trackback listings are utterly absent. That will change, obviously, but probably not until later this evening.

Also, older posts with photographs are likely to be substantially broken, layout-wise. That's on the to-do list for the days ahead, because that's going to be a bit more involved now that the top portion of posts is drastically different and the images won't fit where they are placed based upon the previous design.

Any other issues should be posted to the comments to this item, or sent to me via email.

Update

The search results page(s) will be broken as well, until further notice. All the data will be on the page, somewhere, but it won't look like anything until I go in and make serious adjustments to the templates for that part of the site.

Update

Search results page is fixed, although may undergo some further tinkering along the way. Comment preview/error and trackback pages are still without a layout.

Not rendering fine here; (a) when an article is
selected, the left hand side column slides down
below the article column, and (b) the `remember
personal info?' box doesn't have any Yes/No text
in it. This is with Internet Explorer 6.0.2 on
    a Windows XP pro box

Now that is deeply weird. The layout for the index page and the entry pages is exactly the same, so they shouldn't be rendering differently.

Maybe it's something about the entry pages having the comment area -- perhaps the comment form is too wide and is breaking the layout on entry pages or something.

    Thanks, I'll look into it.

    Comment test. Ignore.

    Another test. Ignore also.

Hi Bix, the new design is great!

I played with IE6 and the CSS and found that decreasing the width of .boxcenter to 397 or less makes the columns work. But I don't know how that would affect other browsers...

Also, on Windows (IE 6, XP Pro) there is an error (exclamation point in the status bar). Double-clicking it reveals an error message. Screenshot. Removing the "Jellycounter Code" section of HTML fixes that problem.

The boxcenter thing makes no sense to, however, as this layout was tested under various Win/IE and everything rendered fine. Then, it turns out today that entry pages are wacked out under Win/IE -- but the general box codes are the same. The only thing different on the entry pages are the comments and the comment form stuff.

Now the Yes/No button text is back, but the left hand column is still down at the bottom. It's not cuddled under the article column, but it's kitty-corner off the lower left hand corner from the article.

    Aren't style sheets fun?

You know what would be cool? Tables. :-)

David, is this sitll only happening on the entry pages and not the main index page? What about the About page?

  10. Elaine on 20 Nov 2003

On my IE when I go to the comments, the left sidebar renders after the posted comments.

  11. The One True b!X on 20 Nov 2003

But it's only on the entry page, not on any other page (main index, about, etc) on the site, right?

  12. The One True b!X on 20 Nov 2003

Okay, everyone let me know. I seem to have tracked it down to the em tags I put in the Note: (beneath "Reader Comments") -- which makes no sense but I'm told that without those em tags, things are fine now?

  13. David Parsons on 21 Nov 2003

The about page has the same bizarre behavior. That seems to be it.

  14. David Parsons on 21 Nov 2003

But wait; now this page is working, leaving only the about page acting funny.

  15. The One True b!X on 21 Nov 2003

Yeah, it appears to be a problem with italics munging the box layout, which is odd in and of itself. Let me try something.

  16. The One True b!X on 21 Nov 2003

Ok, I tried a different potential solution over on the About page than I used for the entry pages. So someone who has been having trouble with the About page please check it again. If it's fine now, it means I can use that solution over here as well, which would be nice because it would restore the use of italics without breaking anything.

And here I am 10 days later to report another one. I've got a sgi1600 monitor in my office (nominal 17", but it's a high density 1600x1024 display) and I've set IE to use the font size I set instead of the one the web pages set, and the front page of the communique has both sidebars pushed down below the news bar.

I'll start muttering darkly about cascading style sheets now (almost all of the css-only webpages I read on the 1600sw screw up in about the same way) because there's not much I can do about it unless I go out and buy magnifying glasses.
