Everyone's Smacking Down The Goldschmidt Rumor

Both The Oregonian and Portland Tribune take on the recent rumors that Neil Goldschmidt was going to join the mayoral race. According to Henry Stern (whose "City Matters" column doesn't appear to have been posted online, likely thanks to the Advance Internet software The Oregonian uses which everybody despises):

Rumors flying recently that Neil Goldschmidt was interested in becoming mayor again set many City Hall hearts aflutter. A Goldschmidt assistant says there's no truth to the speculation, which doesn't surprise former Commissioner Mike Lindberg. He reports being among the Goldschmidt-era cronies at a meeting a few weeks back where the ex-mayor and ex-govenror gave the griup an "it's pass the torch" time talk.

And Phil Stanford weighs in as well:

Best rumor of the week: Neil Goldschmidt for mayor. ... In any case, it was good enough to cause reporters from the Trib, as well as the Daily Other and Willy Week, to burn up a lot of telephone time before concluding there's absolutely nothing to it. ... Only reason I even mention it is here that Goldschmidt has requested an unusual hour-long meeting with the mayor, perhaps as early as today -- and not even Vera knows what the former mayor, now a high-powered lobbyist, wants to talk about. ... And if it's not a courtesy call to tell her he's throwing his hat in the ring, what do you suppose he wants?

This rumor was dangled here as well recently. One can't help but wonder just how it got started t begin with.
