(Updated) Two Meetings To Keep Police Issues Center Stage This Week
Note: This post has been updated. Any and all updates appear at the end of the original post.
As referenced in the quote from today's Portland Tribune story (see previous item), there are two meetings later this week which will serve to keep police issues front-and-center. Potentially, they could also serve to test the approach of the newly-appointed Chief Foxworth.
First up is the 2:00 PM "time certain" on Thursday's agenda before the Portland City Council:
TIME CERTAIN: 2:00 PM -- Accept the 2003 Independent Police Review Division Report on officer-involved shootings and deaths in police custody (Resolution introduced by Auditor Blackmer)
It's expected that various parties will be testifying before the Council about this report, including (as far as I know) Chief Foxworth, who did not speak to the report all that much at this morning's news conference, save to say that despite the mixed feelings of Bureau personnel, it offers good recommendations.
Then this Saturday brings the release of a community report on the Kendra James shooting by the Albina Ministerial Alliance. Findings, recommendations, and proposed next steps will be heard from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Maranatha Church of Christ, located at 4222 NE 12th Avenue.
Readers might remember I was curious about the attendence of City Council members at the May community forum on the James incident. While I await responses from other Council offices, I can report that Commissioner Leonard plans to attend this Saturday's event.
Editor's note: As of this item, I've renamed my Law & the Courts category to the broader Law Enforcement & Legal Issues. In the coming days, I will be methodically culling through posts here to find those related to the Portland Police Bureau which were not being placed in this category previously and pulling them in.
Update
Francesconi's office reports that he will be there as well.
Update
Word from Sten's office is that he has to do some re-scheduling to do it, but he should be there for at least part of the event on Saturday.
