(Updated) Breaking News: Oregon Senate To Vote Saturday On Anti-PATRIOT Act Resolution

Note: This post has been updated. Any and all updates appear at the end of the original post.

According to a telephone call from the Lane County Bill of Rights Defense Committee, and confirmed to me just now by a staffer for the Senate Democrats, the Oregon Senate will be holding a floor vote tomorrow Saturday on Senate Joint Memorial 7, which would urge the U.S. Congress to correct certain provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act.

Yes, tomorrow Saturday. They are working through the weekend, presumably in an effort to get through the end of this historically-long session.

It is important that you contact your state Senator immediately and urge them to vote for SJM 7, and get Oregon that much closer to becoming the fourth state in the nation to pass a resolution in protest of the USA PATRIOT Act.

I have a number of other items which I was going to post this evening, but I will hold off on those until sometime tomrrow Saturday, so that this rather time-sensitive item remains up top here.

Update

No, I don't yet have a report on just what time the vote on SJM 7 will be. What I do know, having called the Senate Democrats again, is that the Senate will be reconvening at noon tomorrow (and the staffers literially only just notice of tomorrow's session within the past hour or so). So people have at least until noon Saturday to make these calls. Should I get word on a specific vote time, I'll pass it along via update here.

Update

According to the website for the Oregon State Legislature (click on the link referring to convening times), the Senate convenes at 2:00 PM today, and not noon as originally reported. As of yet, I still have no specific information as to just when SJM 7 will come to a floor vote.

Update

Members and supporters of the various Oregon Bill of Rights Defense Committees today are taking around a letter to members of the Oregon House for them to sign if they want SJM 7 brought to the House floor for a vote should it pass the Senate. According to a spokesperson for the Portland Bill of Rights Defense Committee (standard disclosure: until July 1, I was an organizer for this group), this letter is intended to demonstrate to Speaker Karen Minnis that House members want to see a vote on this matter.

Update

If you happen to be in a position to know what's going on what maneuvering regarding SJM 7 today, please click the "Contact the Editor" link in the left-hand sidebar and drop me a line. I'm working some contacts, but occassionally a reader here has information I haven't gotten to yet.

Update

The Oregon State Senate is now in session, and SJM 7 received its second reading. What is a second reading? According to the legislative glossary:

Like the First Reading, a recitation of the measures number, title, and sponsor by the reading clerk (in the House, just the measure number and title are read). Second Reading occurs after the measure has been referred to committee, worked on, and reported back to the floor (in the house where it originated) for a vote.

Procedurally, what would be next is the third reading:

As in First or Second Readings, a recitation of a measures number, title, and sponsor (in the House, just the measure number and title are read) by the reading clerk on the floor before consideration by either house, usually done before a final vote.

As of this moment, however, the Senate's third reading notice (pdf) does not include SJM 7. So either this notice is not correct, or the third reading is not scheduled for today after all.

Update

Just before 3:00 PM this afternoon, the Senate went into recess until 7:00 PM this evening.

Update

The Oregon State Senate having reconvened at about 8:00 PM, they just now, at about 8:30 PM, adjourned until 10:45 AM on Monday. So far as I know, they did not act upon SJM 7. WHen I have the details on why is was not taken up today, and whether or not it will be taken up at all prior to the end of the session, I will of course post them here.

Just in time to offset Ashcroft's Patriot Act sales tour??

You're kidding, right. The Oregon Senate is going to pass this? The phrase "snowball's chance in hell" comes to mind. Or perhaps "baseball's chance in hell." 8c)

I'm curious as to the current status of Oregon SB 742...

There really isn't much of a current status on SB 742. After the PR disaster when it was introduced, Senator Minnis made rumblings of reworking it and trying again, possibly at the very end of the session, when it might fly through in a flurry of "let's get the Hell out of Salem" final business. But so far as I know, it's not going anywhere.

Word from the Lane County Bill of Rights Defense Committee is simply, at this point, "We are hoping for Monday."
