'Mercury' Story On Recalls Already Out of Date
Meanwhile, the Mercury also checks in with the two mayoral recall campaigns. Unfortunately, their deadlines resulted in an article that's already behind the story:
Since March, [the Better Portland Alliance] has been rattling their saber, announcing their planned assault on Katz. But on Tuesday, out of the blue, the "Recall Vera Katz Committee" beat them to the punch by filing a recall petition with the state election division. Recall Vera now has 90 days to gather nearly 30,000 signatures. If they are successful, the issue will be put to a city-wide vote in a special election as soon as September.
In response, the BPA announced they will suspend their own recall campaign and have offered to help the Recall Vera group gather enough signatures--even though BPA has a different political bent.
As readers here know by now, this cooperation was a stillborn one, as the rhetoric of each camp hardened and the invective between them increased.
For what it's worth, the Mercury also fails to mention the complaint Marvin Moore filed against the BPA prior to launching his own recall effort -- something that occassionally seems to slip through the cracks but I always thought was an important piece of context to the complicated adversarial relationship of these two very different campaigns.

Gee! Since Moore filed, we never heard from the lady that runs the election office either.... could be Moore wasted the cities time?
