Upcoming Portland School Board Candidates Forum On May 8
As I sit here trying to avoid a headache while pouring through information about the candidates for Portland School Board, I remembered that there is an upcoming debate under the auspices of the City Club of Portland's New Leaders Council:
Four seats are open on the Portland School Board and 22 candidates are running to fill those spots. Come ask the candidates the critical questions that will help you determine who is most qualified to navigate a successful future for a school system in crisis. Join us at 6:00 PM on Thursday, May 8, 2003 at Kell's Irish Pub for this "town hall" style forum. All PPS Board candidates have been invited (at least 15 are expected to attend) and will each be given two minutes for a brief statement before a fairly informal question and answer period.
This event is open to the public. No charge for City Club members; $5 for non-members.
This event is scheduled for May 8, 2003, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM (doors open at 5:30 PM) at Kell's Irish Pub, located at 112 SW 2nd Avenue in downtown Portland. Click through to the URL above for information on how to RSVP, or visit this page to indicate your intention to attend.
Parenthetically, I should say that I am extremely turned off by the few candidates who are running as a sort of "slate." Having read through the Portland Tribune questionnaire (pdf), they all give the same answers to the questions posed, as if they are sharing a crib sheet. Which doesn't say much about how they themselves think or feel. Perhaps it's naive and purely visceral, but that sort of "stock response" politicking just tastes bad.

Of course, the real question is going to be just how much of this I can attend before having to run off to the weekly Portland Bill of Rights Defense Committee meeting that same night.
