Those April Unemployment Figures Are Out
Yesterday, I mentioned -- in a post about our state having the nation's highest unemployment rate for the third straight month -- that Oregon's preliminary unemployment figures for April would be released today.
And so here's the news:
Oregon's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 8 percent in April, from 7.6 percent in March. This was Oregon's highest unemployment rate since February 2002, when the rate was 8.1 percent. The state's highest rate since the economic downturn that started two years ago was reached in January 2002 when the rate was 8.4 percent, according to statistics from the state's Employment Department.
You can find more data on matters such as unemployment figures via the Oregon Labor Market Information System, including a breakdown by locality, which tells us that the unemployment rate in Portland for April 2003 was 8.4%, down very slightly from March's rate of 8.5%.
