New Layout Being Tested on Alternative Index Page
I finally came across a site using a layout I've been seeing in my mind's eye but had never quite had the discipline to figure out. Lifting it from Bite My Blog, I'm testing out the new approach over on this text index. I've been working on it privately for an hour or so, but figured it made sense to point readers to it. If you have any feedback on it, please add a comment to this item.

And yes, I do know that under some combinations of Windows and IE, the left-hand sidebar continues to get pushed all the way to the bottom.
No, I still haven't had the motivation to re-CSS this site to fix the problem. Well, I haven't even sat down to figure out just what the fix is, for the matter.

I like the new look. Dense. Easier to refer people out in meatspace to your front page and expect they'll have an easier time finding whatever caused me to refer them.

Only thing I can't figure is the number of items per section. I think the full-text item up top needs to remain a single post. But the "recent items" section in the middle could maybe be 8 instead of 6.

At six items, the "recent items" section isn't so big that you can't see there's another section below it on a 1024x768 display. It keeps the page looking less "listy" and more dynamic with that sort of break in sight somewhere.
I can see the desire for eight as the content currently stands, since there are four items from the same event currently on display.

Hey b!X, just dropping in briefly, after a weekend absence, and I find you've been tweaking! Well, rest easy, it looks cool. I like it, it has a newspapery feel. Much easier to find headlines of interest.
I'm still in HTML, haven't even waded into CSS yet.
BTW I think six is a fine number. It's more balanced. Eight is too rigid and formal for my tastes.
