May 21: 'Community Mapping: Strengths & Weaknesses'

Beginning with this post, I inaugurate an Events category. The presence of an event here does not necessarily imply that I will be there for certain, although it definitely suggests that I intend to if I can. Both of the events I'm posting today were found via the New Leaders Council of the City Club of Portland.

First up, "Community Mapping: Strengths & Weaknesses," to be held on May 21:

With a poor economy, a budget crisis in Salem, and thousands of Oregonians in need across the state, how and where do we begin to help our community grow strong? Join us 6:00 p.m. through 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 in the Attic of the Buffalo Gap Saloon & Eatery to hear how two Community Mapping experts approach surveying the strengths and weaknesses in our state and region.
Jeff Tryens, executive director of the Oregon Progress Board, will speak about the recently released 2003 benchmark Performance Report, which offers essential information on Oregon's social, economic, and environmental health.
Dr. Diane Dorfman, a research associate at Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory, created the Community Asset Mapping Workbook, and will discuss how we can promote child and youth success by working with schools to build culturally-responsive partnerships with families and communities.

You can find more information here -- and you can RSVP to the event there as well.
