Of course, most people reading this site have no idea of the story behind this image. I had intended, originally, to post something of an explanatory message, but in the end I don't have the heart for it.
So we'll have to let it pass with this: The two-year-old pictured here is the single most important and profound connection with another human being that I have ever had, despite his not being my kid, despite my not being "involved" with his Mom.
Today, he boarded an airplane to go live 3,000 miles away.
That's really all the story I am emotionally equipped to tell in this space.
But at least you all have some sort of explanation for why this seemingly-irrelevant personal image has suddenly appeared here.

A touching and hard moment. Always remember: as much as G. meant to you, you meant even more to him because you were there for him in a critical time in his life. You gave him the love and care a father would in a formative time. Because of you, he will trust in himself and others; he will understand what love is. He will remember you and how you were with him. Believe me, as one who once,at only a year older than G. is now, needed what you gave, I know how important those things are.
You did a fine job. As you miss him,carry the knowledge of that with you always.
