(Updated) Hawash Rally in the Rain
Note: This post has been updated. Any and all updates appear at the end of the original post.
On this workday morning, supporters of civil liberties gathered in the rain to protest the treatment of Mike Hawash, who was detained on March 20 as a "material witness" by the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force in the parking lot of Intel Corp's Hawthorne Farms. Reportedly, Hawash's attorneys are under a gag order and cannot speak of the details of his detention.
This morning's rally was held at the Mark O. Hatfield U.S. Courthouse in downtown Portland because friends and supporters believed that at 8:30 AM this morning, Hawash was present at a hearing somewhere inside the building.
Young radicals, middle-aged libertarians, white liberals, and children mixed with Arabs and Muslim supporters of Hawash beneath the light but steady drizzle of Monday morning.
Signs ranged from general expressions of support for civil liberties, to warnings against racial or religious profiling, to exhortations to "Free Mike Now," to simple demands that the veil of secrecy behind the detention be lifted.
What began with a handful eventually grew to a small crowd of approximately one hundred people, who eventually heard from Steven McGeady, a former Intel VP, Hawash's boss through much of the 90s, and the one responsible for hosting the Free Mike Hawash website. I'm assuming for the moment that beside him stands Rohan Coelho, a long-time friend of Hawash and his wife.
Update
The text of today's court order is available. While it addresses the matter of maintaining secrecy regarding a case that revolves around information to be presented to a grand jury, it avoids altogether the matter of "flight risk" -- something Hawash is likely not.
In the end, the order directs that Hawash either be deposed or presented to the grand jury by April 25. Following this date, a "closed detention hearing" regarding Hawash's status will be held on April 29.

Could the sanctimony have been thicker? On this page, last April:
"On this workday morning, supporters of civil liberties gathered in the rain to protest the treatment of Mike Hawash..."
Wonderful. "Supporters of civil liberties" are good at that. When it's politically convenient, of course. Now that their catchprases and self-congratulation have been proven hollow gestures made in a swift tide of anti-Americanism?
"We hope that justice has been served, and our focus now shifts to support for Mike's family in this difficult time."
It is a difficult time, made all the more difficult by would-be martyrs for Islamo-fascism, and Portlanders who'd gladly shill for them.

Funny funny, hindsight is always 20/20. Look at him and his terrorist ways, look like you people need to find new things to rally around. Thanks for taking the time to listen to this communique. Its interesting how soon interst dies off when the terrorist is exposed. Sweet, treats, I'm off to see the wizard. Adios
