A few observations and explanations, although I haven't been doing that as a rule.
First off, I'm amused that I didn't notice at the time I took the shot that PICT0048.JPG shows mounted police beneath a BANANA REPUBLIC sign.
Secondly, PICT0069.JPG is of the bike cop who yelled at me for stepping off the sidewalk to get a picture of the pro-war demonstrators. Over the course of the afternoon and evening, the premise was that if the protestors kept to the sidewalks and didn't cross any streets against the light, they would be (more or less) left alone.
If you scroll down PICT0083.JPG through PICT0085.JPG -- an "off the sidewalk" incident that resulted in at least one person being brought all the way to the ground by police -- you will notice in PICT0084.JPG that the very same bike cop is right in the middle of the altercation.
Plus I dig the unexpected way (unexpected to me anyway) the reflective details of the police uniforms glow eerily in the light of the flash.

My favorite part of this night was the selective enforcement. I arrived late and didn't realize how tough the cops were being.
So I see everyone stopped at a "don't walk" sign, and I'm thinking "fuck this! the cops are already blocking the street. I'm crossing!"
So, they scream "STOP!" at us repeatedly, which I ignore, so they pull my girlfriend and I to the side and start to get tough with us and I feign ignorance and tell them I'm just downtown hanging out and didn't realize what was going on... and they let us go!
And then I rejoined the protest and continued the slow, lawful march through town.
