Students Stage Distributed Sit-In

For a brief moment last night, I pondered heading up to Franklin High School to check in with students there. In the end, I didn't even get around to posting about this story at all.

Students at several area high schools staged sit-ins overnight to protest budget cuts affecting public education:

"We need to raise awareness," said Wilson sophomore Pesha Wassersterom, "not just among voters and community members, but also among students. They need to know exactly how the cuts being planed will affect them."
Many students said they are fed up with the cuts, which have caused the Portland school district to pull funding for spring sports, gut some programs and possibly cut days from the academic calendar.
"Worst case scenario is that school will basically turn into a state-run daycare," said student Josh Herbert.

This comes in the wake of a recent school walk-out staged by many students, and just before a large rally in Salem this coming Monday.
