Schools to Drop Days Statewide
In the event that Measure No. 28 fails, Portland's public schools will end up having set something of a trend for other districts to follow:
More than 50 Oregon school districts could join Portland in eliminating school days between now and June if Measure 28 fails later this month, according to a statewide survey.
The cuts range from two to 20 days and would hit districts from Hillsboro to Klamath Falls.
These figures come from an Oregon School Boards Association survey which "drew responses from 105 of Oregon's 198 school districts." Of these, "[f]ifty-five districts said they plan to cut days from the school year if Measure 28 fails."
Included in this story are the requisite gripings of "tax activists" who blame the salaries of public school teachers, one of the most-maligned professions in American politics.
