Possible Changes to Morrison Bridge

Meanwhile, remaining for the moment in the realm of development issues, Multnomah County is considering changes to the Morrison Bridge to make it more friendly to bicyclists and pedestrians:

On Jan. 29, county planners will hold a public meeting for comment on three proposals. One calls for widening the sidewalk on the south side of structure, a second would replace a center lane of traffic with a bike path, and a third would improve the north side crossing. A north or south realignment also would add observation stops on the bridge deck and improved access on each end of the bridge.

Illustrating some of the logic behind such changes is Sharon Wood Wortman (author of The Portland Bridge Book which is on this site's Amazon wishlist), who says that the Morrison Bridge is "the only bridge that gives you an unobstructed 360-degree view of the city."
